Lifeguards nod to stay alert and actively scan the pool. Other reasons for nodding would be to count how many people are in the pool. It could also be used as a way of communication between lifeguards.
Reasons why lifeguards nod:
1. To stay alert
If you pay attention to the lifeguards in a crowded pool, they will often nod their heads.
Staying on high alert at all times is very difficult, but as a lifeguard, you must constantly observe the activity in the pool. Nodding is an active technique to maintain the required attention and helps lifeguards stay concentrated. Lifeguards must continuously monitor the pool to prevent possible emergencies and avoid dangers.
2. Better active scanning
A pool is a very big space, and it can be challenging to have a good overview of everything, especially when it is very crowded; having everything under control requires massive attention. Nodding can help a lifeguard keep track of everything and help them mentally note everything going on in the pool.
3. Counting the number of people in the pool
Lifeguards count the number of people in the pool at regular intervals. This helps seek out if anybody may have submerged in the pool and needs help. This is crucial as often, in very crowded pools, people swimming may not even notice someone who requires emergency help.
4. Communication between lifeguards
Whilst scanning the pool, lifeguards, with the help of a nod, indicate to another lifeguard that a specific area requires more attention.
Nodding will also show that the lifeguard is paying attention to everything happening in the pool. Sometimes lifeguards will start nodding in unison as they are so concentrated and maintain the same rhythm.
These would be the main reasons why lifeguards nod their heads. There are several other scanning strategies, one of which is called “the 4 P’s”.
The 4 Ps:
Position:
Where you position yourself as a lifeguard is quite important as your position will determine how effective your pool observation will be. A position at a point where the entire pool area is visible is the best position for a lifeguard. Moving around the pool to keep all areas of the pool in sight is something that lifeguards will also often do. Higher points will give lifeguards an excellent overview without anything blocking their view.
Posture:
The posture of a lifeguard should be positive, upright and alert so that the mind stays alert and the body is ready to spring into action at any given moment. Preferably a lifeguard should stay standing most of the time; although this can be quite tiring, it does enable the lifeguard to remain alert at all times. Sitting down is acceptable, but the lifeguard risks losing their attention. Moving around is helpful to pump blood and oxygen to the brain so the lifeguard doesn’t get tired too quickly.
Pattern:
Different patterns of observation of the pool help lifeguards have every area of the pool overview. Splitting different pool areas among other lifeguards will also help, as it is easier to keep an overview over smaller areas rather than the whole pool. Various techniques will offer the lifeguards a more focused observation. The methods include circular, rectangular, and checking up and down the lanes. Scanning left to right is how most lifeguards will scan a pool, the same way you read from left to right.
Patrons:
Scanning patrons and identifying whether these need more attention or less is very helpful for lifeguards to be prepared in case of emergency. Each patron’s age group, swimming ability and possible special needs will help the lifeguard be mentally prepared.
Lifeguards use all types of strategies and techniques to stay alert and have everything under control. They carry a lot of responsibility; thus, using different strategies will relieve pressure and help them mentally be prepared for possible emergencies, where they will have to spring into action.
