The simple answer is no. A lifeguard is not allowed to have dyed hair of an unnatural colour as it is still seen as unprofessional. Thus if you have your hair dyed and it is not a natural hair colour, it is unlikely that you will be accepted to lifeguarding.

Lifeguards have the duty of supervising swimmers and jumping into action in case the swimmer is in danger. They have a lot of responsibility, but what does it take to become a lifeguard?

Physical attributes preferred for lifeguards:

Physical fitness

A lifeguard needs to be in top physical form. That does not necessarily mean that you should have a super muscular body, but it is good to be in good shape. You will have to be able to be quick on your feet and be able to swim quickly in case of a rescue. Thus you will have to always keep up with your physical fitness.

Natural look

As mentioned previously, the lifeguarding job is still quite old-fashioned regarding the exterior look. Natural is preferred. Natural hair colour, for women, preferably no makeup as you will be in and out of the water; thus, heavy makeup is not desired.

Are piercings or tattoos allowed?

Visible body piercings are not allowed. However, one can wear nose stud piercings, but it is not allowed to be bigger than 1/8 inch in diameter. The same goes for ear piercings; hoop earrings must be less than ½ inch, stud earrings no bigger than ¼ inch. Tattoos are allowed, but they should be appropriate.

Other important characteristics:

Teamwork

Lifeguarding is all about being a good team player. In emergencies, you will have to quickly orientate yourself amongst the team and work together to rescue and prevent any possible dangers. When observing a swimming pool, you will also have to distribute the areas fairly amongst each other. Your teammates should be able to rely on you, the same way you will have to be able to rely on your teammates.

Communication

Being a good communicator is essential for any lifeguard, especially when it comes down to telling people off for their actions.

This also goes for communicating with the other lifeguards. Being clear in your requirements and other organisational aspects is very important. Communicating your point correctly to the people swimming is more difficult than some might think. You must be very direct and stern if someone disobeys the rules, especially as some customers may not want to listen and won´t necessarily react or care.

Confidence

Confidence is key in being a lifeguard. It is closely linked to communication as you must be confident to communicate sternly. If a customer resists your advice and even goes against it, you must be consequential and ask them to leave. This will require quite a bit of confidence. Upon making this kind of decision, confidence will also play a significant role in not having doubts.

Observant

Lifeguards must always be on the lookout, so having every pool area under good observation is key. Observing how people behave inside and outside the pool is one of the primary jobs of a lifeguard.

If you are considering becoming a lifeguard, do not be intimidated if you don’t meet all of the criteria, especially the physical aspects. Everybody has a chance, so if you think you are fit for the job, try your luck!
