The temple of doom is deemed dangerous for diving due to the combination of extremely dark spots and complex tunnels (systems).

The temple of doom is one of a list of diving spots only for brave and experienced divers.

Cave Diving

Temple of Doom, Mexico

At first, there is nothing hazardous when entering this cenote (sinkhole). The danger starts when divers enter the tunnels. The tunnels quickly become intricate, combined with pure darkness; many divers easily get lost. In some cases, insufficient planning and inexperience end with divers running out of air and never getting out.

Orda cave, Russia

Cold water, Sharp edges, intricate tunnels. The Orda Cave lies beneath the Ural mountains and is a gypsum crystal cave. The water is very cold but crystal clear due to the underwater crystals. To be allowed to dive here, a diving certificate must be provided as it is one of the most challenging diving spots to manoeuvre in.

Jacobs well, Texas

.

This well is great to have a little dip in to cool off, but diving in this well is not for the inexperienced. Although the clear water makes it quite tempting for people to dive, the deeper you dive intricate tunnels begin, which for a few, were fatal. One of the chambers in the well includes an opening so narrow that the divers have to risk taking off their gas tank to be able to get through. Alongside the tunnels, there is also a bit of a current, making reaching the well’s end quite tricky.

Devil Springs, Florida

The dangers of the previous cave diving sites are similar: narrow passages, limited lighting, and currents make diving very difficult. The springs are privately owned, so you are not alone when attempting to dive. There are diving rules and waivers to be signed that ensure your safety.

The springs are estimated to be around 33 million years old. Thus, artefacts have been there for centuries, giving the dive an additional exciting twist.

Wreck diving

Chuuk Lagoon, Micronesia

During the second world war, the Chuuk lagoon used to be the main naval space for the Empire of Japan. Since the U.S. had attacked and destroyed this base, all the ships, mines, torpedos and thousands of other explosives are at the bottom of the lagoon.

So although this diving spot will not have the same challenges as cave diving, the narrow passages and limited light, there is a risk of bumping into the massive amounts of explosives, especially as a lot of them have not been found again and so may be fully functional still.

The shipwrecks and the incredible marine life, however, do offer this diving spot a uniqueness and makes it somewhat understandable why it is quite a popular diving spot.

Black water/night diving

Kona Coast, Hawaii

Although quite scary, night diving offers a unique and life-changing experience. Much marine life will come alive during the night, and the contrast of bright, beautiful coral reefs against the dark surrounding it makes it all look magical.

One of the best night diving spots is on the Kona coast, Hawaii. The darkness does give a unique touch but also, as you may understand, is the biggest danger. Especially when you enter the water at night, it will be pitch black, which can be very frightening. Not knowing what’s beneath you and what is around you is scary.

However, the creatures that come alive and swim in pitch-black waters are amazing. Bioluminescent animals come out and bring light to the experience.

Heli- diving

Eureka Oil-platforms, Los Angeles, U.S

With heli-diving, it is often not the actual dive but the entry. Heli-diving is when divers are dropped into the water from a couple of meters above, as the name states-from a helicopter. So not only do you have to mentally be prepared for a dive, which can already be quite nerve-racking, but you also have to be ready to jump from a helicopter!

Diving next to submerged oil rigs can be pretty scary, and the oil rigs are massive. Around the oil rigs, there is a nice variety of marine life, with cute seals and bright coral reefs.

Be prepared if you consider going to any of these diving spots. Do not attempt them if you lack experience, as it may end fatally. Some of these diving spots can be exciting and a bucket list experience if you seek adrenaline. But do be cautious!
